Duterte, accompanied by Grade 8 student Naomi, shared about her visit to the aviary via Facebook on Wednesday, June 14.

Sambisig and Geothermica were from the Philippine Eagle Foundation in Davao City, the Vice President’s hometown.

Duterte herself was nicknamed “agila (eagle)” by her supporters.

“Ang mga ibon ay ipinadala sa Singapore sa layong maparami, maproteksyonan, at ma-conserve ang kanilang species (The birds were sent to Singapore to cultivate, protect, and conserve their species),” she captioned the photos she shared.

Duterte also posted about a learning presentation by the Mandai Research Group, which discussed their various conservation efforts in the Philippines to protect and save the other species of birds.

“Nagpapasalamat tayo sa organisasyong ito sa kanilang ginagawa upang mapangalagaan at kalingain ang mg nanganganib ng mga uri ng ibon (We are thankful to the organization for what they do to preserve and care our endangered species of birds),” she added.

The two Philippine eagles were first sent to Singapore’s Jurong Bird Park in 2019. They were then moved to the Mandai Wildlife Reserve after the closure of bird park in January.

The wildlife reserve is made up of other popular Singapore attractions like the Singapore Zoo, River Wonders, and the Night Safari.
