Makati City, DOH launch HPV vaccination program for students

The Makati City local government and the Department of Health (DOH) spearheaded the launch of the school-based immunization program against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) on Tuesday, June 15, as part of the efforts in promoting awareness on HPV and cervical cancer. The launch was held at the Makati Coliseum and was attended by Makati City Vice Mayor Monique Lagdameo and officials from the DOH. Dubbed as "Sa Aking Paglaki, Walang HPV," the vaccination program aims to inoculate the city's Grade 4 female students with the HPV vaccine and increase their protection against other diseases and ailments caused by the said virus. In her speech, Lagdameo highlighted the importance of vaccination against HPV to ensure maximum protection against the virus. "We in the city government of Makati, led by Mayor Abby Binay-Campos, are grateful to the Department of Health and the Department of Education Makati for looking out the welfare and protection of our proud Makatizen youth. The battle with this virus has been a long and tedious one so we commited to taking proactive steps to stop its spread," Lagdameo said. "The city government of Makati believes in the power of the vaccines and we encourage parents, the guardians, and all proud Makatizens to do the same," she added. The vice mayor also stressed that the city is doing everything it can to make the vaccines accessible to all eligible individuals in the city to protect them against the said virus. According to the DOH, the HPV vaccine can be administered to girls ages nine to 14 while adult females may avail of the free cervical cancer screenings being offered in health centers. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends HPV vaccines as part of routine vaccinations in all countries, along with other preventive measures. The vaccines require two or three doses depending on a person's age and immune status. The vaccines provide protection for at least five to 10 years while cervical cancer screening is still required following vaccination. It added that vaccinating a large portion of the population may also benefit the unvaccinated. The first HPV vaccine became available in 2006. As of 2022, 125 countries include HPV vaccine in their routine vaccinations for girls, and 47 countries also for boys.
