Heart Evangelista on the moment she caused a YSL sunglasses craze

‘I feel like YSL was completely shocked that Filipinos can actually make it happen—make a pair of sunglasses sold out.’

Eyewear is beyond just a piece of accessory that completes a look. It is one of the pieces that merge style and function. For some, it helps them see clearly, while others use it as a tool for self-expression. And one of the many that understand perfectly well the meaning and purpose of eyewear is Vision Express.

With over 60 branches all over the Philippines, Vision Express is on a mission to help Filipino see clearly and find the perfect pair that suits their style with its “vision for life” mantra. Its goal continues as it opens its flagship store located at Glorietta 2 in Makati City.

During the store's official launch, the optical chain showcased its wide selections of eyewear pieces from over 80 brands, such as Ray-ban, Gucci, Cartier, and Saint Laurent as well as Bottega Veneta, Prada, Montblanc, Dolce and Gabbana, among others. The store also houses the VisionBot, a machine that is a testament to the brand’s commitment in providing the best eye care solution. As per the brand, the machine “provides an even more tailored, medically-based full-scope optometric care that allows their highly trained eye doctors to identify, and diagnose a wide range of ophthalmic conditions including glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eyes, myopia and hyperopia, and diabetic retinopathy.”

Leading the event was Vision Express’ president Neelam Gopwani Chainani with brand ambassador Heart Evangelista. As a style icon and an advocate for well-being, Heart fully understands the goal of the brand. According to her, their partnership started back when she caused a craze for a particular pair of YSL shades.

Back in 2022, the Vogue 100 muse wore the fashion house’s “New Wave” sunglasses during her time at Paris Fashion Week. The piece, with its sleek design, cat-eye frames, and nylon lenses, perfectly complemented the black and white custom look by designer Mark Bumgarner. That style moment caused the YSL sunglasses to be sold out all over the globe.

“I’d like to believe that what started this is the YSL shades. For me, it was a huge statement because, in the fashion industry, it is hard to introduce our market,” Heart said during the launch. “I feel like YSL was completely shocked that Filipinos can actually make it happen—make a pair of sunglasses sold out. It wasn't just about fashion… it's much more than that. It's about expression, empowering each other, and loving yourself.”
