Vice Ganda, Anne Curtis spark online debate over song royalties

The phrase"Respect Local Artists" is currently trending on social media.

This, after fans of SB19 called out "It's Showtime" hosts Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis following their comment about one of the group's songs in the "Isip Bata" segment of the show last June 10.

There, a contestant wanted to perform using SB19's song "Gento."

But someone from behind the camera informed the hosts that the said song can't be used.

Vice said in jest: "Bawal, naniningil na sila, naniningil na. Yung 'Rampa' libre, ayaw niyong itry?"

Anne added: "Talaga? Hindi ba good promo yon for the music industry? May ganon na pala, sayang."

"E may bayad na e," Vice related.

Netizens quickly shared their two cents about the exchange.

Also joining in on the ruckus is songwriter Thyro Alfaro.

"Hindi pala common knowledge na may bayad ang paggamit (at pag ere/perform to the public) ng isang kanta. Hehe. Sad. Baka naman hindi lang sila aware," Thyro said.

He also reposted it on Facebook, writing: "Wait.. Bakit issue to? Haha! Hindi pala common knowledge na usage (na official) = bayad? Hahaha! How do you think composers make money?"

Fans expressed their point of view too.

Hehe."

Another maintained: "Admit it or not, pag bagong artist and producers, kailangan nila ng push nang from shows like this para mag trend… so dapat po ba bawal din un? Isnt it because of free media, nag re-emerge ang TALA ni Sarah G? Nagbayad po ba ang mga nag sayaw sa tiktok?"

The singer-songwriter responded: "May performance royalty maski promo. Basta nagamit at pumasok sa playlist, may bayad yan. Unless naka whitelist (di ako sigurado) pero up to the publisher na kung sisingil pa sila ng synchronization or kung ano pa. With regards to tiktok, it's a relatively new platform. But yes people receive money from tiktok (di lang ako sure in what way kasi honestly di naman ako nakakapagtrack down ng breakdown ng royalty reports ko). Pero definitely the users do not pay for it. Sa madaling sabi, maski papanong paraan, nababayaran yan. Sentimo na nga lang minsan."

Artist Sam Concepcion also reacted to the post, saying: "They might be talking about the choreography?"

Thyro answered: "hahahahahahha! Wait iba yata yan. Hahaha"

Cause yung pag play ng music, any song sa live broadcast will be paid through the 'performance royalties' which Abs naman is annually paying sa Filscap Thyro Alfaro."

Meanwhile, on Twitter, Sam seemingly reiterated his two cents about the issue, tweeting: "Pay artists their royalties."

Skusta Clee also made known his thoughts on the matter.

He posted on Facebook: "Kaya walang pag asenso eh! Nire-rape nyo masyado mga artist dito sa bansa kawawa yung mga walang alam sa music business kasi naa-abuso. 'Para ma-promote yung kanta?' Respect OPM!"
