OCTA survey: Most Filipinos feel safe in their neighborhoods
Majority of Filipinos feel safe in their neighborhoods, according to OCTA Research’s Tugon ng Masa survey results released on Tuesday, June 13.
OCTA asked 1,200 respondents about their opinion or personal experience with peace and order in their communities in a non-commissioned survey conducted from March 24 to 28.
Eighty-seven percent of Filipinos said they feel safe in their neighborhoods, while only 4 percent do not.
“Across the major areas, NCR (National Capital Region) and Balance Luzon have the highest percentage of adult Filipinos (91 percent) who feel safe in their own neighborhood,” OCTA said.
In terms of feeling unsafe in their own neighborhood, all major areas have similar percentages: Metro Manila (3 percent), Balance Luzon (4 percent), Visayas (4 percent), and Mindanao (5 percent).
Socio-economic classes ABC (92 percent) and D (90 percent) have the highest percentages of adult Filipinos who feel safe in their communities.
Meanwhile, all socio-economic classes have similar rates of adult Filipinos who do not feel safe within their neighborhood: Class ABC (4 percent), D (4 percent), and E (6 percent).
According to OCTA, the percentage of adult Filipinos who feel safe in their neighborhood varies by region, ranging from 51 to 100 percent.
“The highest rate was observed in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and Mimaropa (100 percent), while the lowest satisfaction rating was recorded in Bicol Region (51 percent),” OCTA said.
Bicol Region, however, has the highest percentage of adult Filipinos who feel unsafe in their neighborhood (28 percent).

Most Filipinos feel safe in their homes
According to the OCTA survey, 71 percent of Filipinos feel safe in their homes because they believe the likelihood of burglars breaking in is low. Meanwhile, only 10 percent of individuals do not feel secure in their homes. “Among the major areas, Balance Luzon (84 percent) has the highest percentage of adult Filipinos who feel safe from potential break-ins. In contrast, in the Visayas (23 percent), the highest rate of adult Filipinos express concerns about their safety, fearing that burglars can break into their homes,” OCTA said. Seventy-four percent of Class D adults feel safe from break-ins, while 15 percent of Class ABC adults don't feel safe in their homes.. The percentage of adult Filipinos who feel safe from potential break-ins varies by region, ranging from 32 to 100 percent. CAR and Mimaropa both received 100 percent, while Bicol Region registered the lowest rate of 32 percent. Furthermore, Western Visayas has the highest percentage of adult Filipinos who do not feel safe and are concerned that burglars will break into their homes (52 percent).Most Filipinos feel safe walking alone at night in their neighborhood
During the same survey period, OCTA found that 81 percent of Filipinos feel safe walking alone at night in their neighborhood, while only 10 percent do not feel secure. “In the major areas, the highest percentage of adult Filipinos who feel safe walking alone at night within their neighborhood is in the NCR (88 percent). Conversely, in Visayas (21 percent), the highest percentage of adult Filipinos express a lack of safety when walking alone in their neighborhood at night,” it said. Meanwhile, 11 percent of Filipinos in Mindanao have conflicting opinions about how safe it is for them to walk home alone at night.Less than half of Filipinos think they live in a drug-free community
According to OCTA’s survey, 48 percent of adult Filipinos believe they live in a neighborhood free of illegal drugs, while 23 percent think otherwise. Among the major areas, OCTA said Balance Luzon has the highest percentage of adult Filipinos who believe they live in a drug-free neighborhood (57 percent). Meanwhile, Visayas has the highest rate of Filipinos who do not believe they live in a neighborhood free of illegal drugs (38 percent).
