VP Sara observes Brunei's tech-voc, basic education practices
Vice President Sara Duterte will be in Brunei Darussalam until June 13 to fulfill her role as president of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Council.

Duterte, who is also the Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), met Brunei Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah to discuss affairs of mutual concern for the Philippines and Brunei Darussalam. During her Brunei trip, the Vice President will meet with SEAMEO Vocational and Technical Education and Training (VOCTECH) officials and examine strategies which could be used to further raise the quality of education in Southeast Asia. According to the Office of the Vice President, she will also visit Sekolah Rendah Pusar Ulak, a public school, to observe best practices in Brunei in basic education. She will also attend an exhibition on digital and e-learning tools being used by Seri Mulia Sarjana International School. The Vice President is accompanied by Naomi, a high school student from Bacolod, as part of the You Can Be VP program of the OVP, during her trip. This project aims to provide a unique opportunity to selected students to observe the role of the Vice President in action while on official engagements. To conclude the visit, Duterte will meet the Filipino community in the Sultanate during the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence. Duterte assumed the presidency of the SEAMEO Council during the 52nd SEAMEO VOCTECH Council Conference hosted by the Philippines in Manila in Feb. 2023. The Vice President took over from Mr. Chan Chun Sing, Minister of Education of Singapore who was SEAMEO Secretariat President from 2021 to 2022. A similar two-year term will be served by Vice President Duterte. SEAMEO VOCTECH is one of the 26 SEAMEO centers in the region and was established in Aug. 1990 in Brunei Darussalam. Its mission is to assist SEAMEO Member States in advancing their Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Systems by delivering programs and services that contribute to sustainable development in Southeast Asia.
