(Calvin D. Bags of rice were also distributed to at least 250 families in the densely populated barangay. School bags were also distributed to at least 1,000 children. “We decided to celebrate Independence Day by giving out necessities like rice and school bags. We reached out to the children and senior citizens and all the constituents to give them a good morning breakfast for Independence Day,” said Assistant Secretary Antonio Veloso Jr. Free haircut was also offered by Viscom personnel during the activity. Veloso said more outreach programs such as medical missions will be conducted by OPAV not just in Cebu but also in other provinces in the Visayas. OPAV recently launched the “Bayan Bangon Muli (BBM): A Caravan of Government Services for the People of the Visayas” in Compostela town, northern Cebu. The caravan aims to bring government services closer to the public. “We did the Kadiwa program of our President and the BBM caravan in Compostela. It is an inter-agency coordination to reach out to the people. Our goal is, from the Office of the President, we reach out and give what we can share,” said Velasco. The next BBM caravan will be held in Region 6. During the launching of BBM in Compostela, a job fair and bloodletting activities were held. Free consultation, free drafting, and notarization of legal documents were also provided by volunteer lawyers from the Integrated Bar of the Philippines. Services were also rendered by the Philippine Statistics Office, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Bureau of Internal Revenue, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Migrant Workers, and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration. “The next BBM caravan will be held in Region 6. Then back to Cebu and then to Bohol. This will never stop. At least every month we will have this kind of an outreach program,” said Velasco.
