The 15-year-old Yulo, the younger brother of two-time world champion Carlos Yulo, scored 13.700 points on his first vault and 13.850 on his second for a 13.775 average in his first podium finish in a prestigious international event.
He actually tied for the top spot with Wang Chengcheng after tallying identical 13.775 average, but the Chinese gymnast took home the gold medal after tiebreaks were applied.
Kazakhstan’s Altynkhan Temirbek clinched the bronze with 13.650.
Following his podium finish, the younger Yulo couldn’t hold back tears that was captured in a photo posted by his coach, Reyland Capellan.
Yulo also competed in the floor exercise finals but wound up seventh with 12.000. Japan’s Haruki Fukubayashi claimed the gold medal with 13.700.
Yulo’s younger sister Elaiza, meanwhile, bowed out of contention in the women’s qualification Sunday, June 11.
The 13-year-old posted her best outing in the floor event by finishing at 28thout of 38 participants with 10.9 points. She was 19th and last in vault (11.5), 37thand last in uneven bars (6.9), 37thin balance beam (9.05) and 34thin individual all-around (38.1).
Elaiza’s teammate Haylee Garcia, competed in floor exercise where she finished with 10.5 points, and vault with 10.8.
On Thursday, June 15, it would be oldest brother Carlos’ turn to take the stage when he competes in the senior event along with nine other Filipino hopefuls.
