Pasig barangay intensifies disaster preparedness efforts
In line with national and local government initiatives on disaster preparedness and response, Barangay San Antonio (BSA) in Pasig City is intensifying its grassroots calamity protocols and programs to ensure its citizens are “disaster-ready.”
BSA Councilor Restituto Sistoso Jr. said the barangay has continously been implementing disaster preparedness programs for businesses and households, particularly focus on the potential “Big One” that may hit the city’s “Central Business District.”
"Aside from earthquake drills and building inspections, we also give seminars on every building regarding their structural integrity. Then, we give advice on what they should do to keep their building safe. And we are closely coordinated with our city government," Sistoso said in a press statement.
"[That’s] over 100 buildings. We get assistance from the engineering office for inspections, and we immediately report irregularities and seek help from the city government,” he added.

BSA recently participated in the Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill last Thursday, June 8, and continuous to conduct their own regular drills in local government offices, schools, and other establishments. Sistoso said evacuation plans have also been laid out, but the evacuation areas change every year because open spaces are constantly being occupied in the barangay as it further develops. “So continuous po natin ini-inform ang ating residents kung saan ang possible evacuation areas lalong lalo na po for earthquake (We continuously inform and update our residents on the possible evacuation areas especially for earthquakes). We regularly revise our evacuation map," he explained.

Seminars for both adults and the youth are also conducted to help them understand and identify the hazards within the barangay, as well as educate them on what to do in the event of earthquakes, floods, fires and other emergencies. "Earthquake, flood, and other disasters may be inevitable, but losing lives and properties to those is not. Prevention will always be better than cure—totoo 'yan (that’s true),” said BSA Chairman Raymond Lising. “We don't want to risk our residents' safety, homes, and resources. That's why we take preparedness to heart and remain vigilant 24/7, all-year round,” he added. BSA was a former recipient of the Galing Pook Awards for its Outstanding Local Governance Programs in Disaster Preparedness and Management.
