P33-M 'ayuda' for Albay coming amid Mayon restiveness--Romualdez
House Speaker Martin Romualdez (Speaker’s office)
Some P33 million worth of assistance--in cash and in kind--is on its way to the families affected by what is seen as the imminent eruption of Mayon Volcano in Albay. This, after the office of Speaker Martin Romualdez and Tingog Party-list facilitated the release of the funds for the three affected districts of the province. These affected areas are the 1st district, under Rep. Edcel Lagman; the 2nd district, under Rep. Joey Salceda; and the 3rd district, under Rep. Fernando Cabredo. The assistance from the Speaker's office will be coursed through their respective offices. According to a statement from Romualdez on Sunday, June 11, each of the three districts will receive P1 million worth of assistance or "ayuda"--specifically, P500,000 in cash and P500,000 in relief packs. The funds were sourced from Romualdez's personal disaster response fund. "The members of the House are one with the people of Albay during this challenging time. Mayon Volcano's eruption is something that we cannot stop, but so is showing malasakit (compassion) to our countrymen when difficulties arise. Together, we will ride out this calamity," Romualdez, Leyte's 1st district representative, said. On top of this, the Speaker's office coordinated with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) under Secretary Rex Gatchalian so that P10 million worth of assistance would be released to each district through the agency's Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program. "We expect this assistance from the DSWD, along with our humble contribution, to ease the worries that our kababayans in Albay may have for the immediate future. Nakahanda po kaming tumugon sa mga pangangailangan ninyo, kahit na magtagal ang kalamidad na ito (We are ready to respond to your needs, even if this calamity takes long)," the Speaker said.
