'Don't go sightseeing near Mayon Volcano'—DOH chief warns

Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Dr. Teodoro "Ted" Herbosa advised the public to refrain from sightseeing near the restive Mayon Volcano due to health risks associated with its gas and dust particle emissions. "Yung emissions nyan may sulfur and sulfur dioxide, kumakabit sa hemoglobin yan nakakapoison ng dugo,tapos yung dust naman yung ash can stick sa lungs natin (Its emissions contain sulfur and sulfur dioxide which attaches to hemoglobin and poisons the blood, then the dust in the ash can stick in our lungs)," the DOH chief said in a media briefing on Sunday, June 11. According to Herbosa, there have been reports of locals and tourists watching the Mayon Volcano erupt, particularly at night, because of its attractive sight. "Remember there is a concomitant health risk for being close to the eruption because of inhaling sulfur dioxide gas or the particulate matter," he reminded. He advised the spectators to wear an N95 mask or, better yet, just not go near the volcano.

Advisory from the tourism department

The Department of Tourism in Bicol issued an advisory on June 9 saying tourists and local visitors are still welcome in various tourist destinations in Albay, except those that are near the volcano. They can still watch the Mayon Volcano from an area away the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone, it said.
