'Chedeng' to exit PAR Sunday night, but 'habagat' rains to persist
Tropical storm Chedeng (international name Guchol) is expected to leave the country’s area of responsibility on Sunday night, June 11, but occasional rains from the enhanced southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” may continue to affect parts of Luzon and Visayas in the next few days, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Chedeng was last spotted 1,210 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon around 4 p.m. on Sunday.
After weakening, it was downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm, with maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts up to 135 kph.
“Chedeng will continue to move away from the Philippine landmass. It is forecast to accelerate northeastward and leave the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) tonight (June 11),” PAGASA said in its 5 p.m. bulletin.
“While the effect of Chedeng on the monsoon will decrease as it moves further away from the PAR, the formation of a frontal system north of extreme Northern Luzon will continue to mainly enhance the southwest monsoon from Tuesday (June 13) onwards and affect most of Luzon, especially the western and extreme northern portions,” PAGASA pointed out.
Based on the PAGASA’s heavy rainfall outlook issued at 11 a.m., up until Sunday night, occasional heavy rains may prevail over Metro Manila, Bulacan, Abra, Benguet, northern Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, and Antique, while occasional intense rains may persist in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.
Through Monday night, June 12, Abra, Benguet, Occidental Mindoro, and northern Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands may continue to experience occasional heavy rains, while Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, and Bataan may experience occasional intense rains.
Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Apayao, Abra, Zambales, and Bataan may continue to occasionally experience heavy rains through Tuesday night, June 13.
Strong winds, rough seas
Over the next two days, PAGASA said the enhancement of the southwest monsoon may result in gusty conditions over the following areas, particularly along the coast and in upland/mountainous areas exposed to winds. June 11: Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Nueva Vizcaya, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Bicol Region, Western Visayas June 12: Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, CAR, Nueva Vizcaya, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Marinduque, northern mainland Palawan, Calamian Islands, Cuyo Islands, Kalayaan Islands, Bicol Region, Western Visayas Chedeng may also bring moderate to rough seas over the seaboard of extreme Northern Luzon in the next 24 hours. Mariners of small seacraft are advised to exercise caution when venturing out to sea. “If inexperienced or operating ill-equipped vessels, avoid navigating in these conditions,” PAGASA said.
