Alex Eala succumbed to her American rival in the quarterfinals of the W25 Madrid International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament in Spain Saturday, June 10.
The third-seeded Eala absorbed a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to fifth pick Makenna Jones that ended her bid for back-to-back titles. Jones eventually survived her semis foe, Sweden’s Jacqueline Cabaj Awad, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, to arrange a final match with second seed Sakura Hosogi of Japan. Despite Eala’s defeat, the 18-year-old is expected to improve her current ITF rankings of No. 266. She went as high as No. 214 in October last October. Last week, Eala won her third pro title after ruling the W25 Yecla also in Spain.
