Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda  stands with Malacañang in urging all national government agencies, including government-owned and controlled corporations and state universities and colleges (SUCs) in implementing water conservation measures amid the looming threat of the El Niño phenomenon over the next few months. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomic Administration (PAGASA) projects an 80 percent chance of El Niño occurrence beginning June to August this year until the first quarter of 2024. While El Niño does not directly cause water scarcity, the reduced rainfall it brings can influence decreased water supply and droughts, Legarda pointed out in a statement issued Saturday, June 10. ‘’And as it is, we are facing the alarming truth that our water resources are already depleting at a disturbing rate,’’ she added. Legarda, an environmentalist, urged everyone to conserve water and act swiftly to avoid a potentially devastating water crisis that would impact our daily lives, food production, and the environment. ‘’We can implement simple yet impactful water conservation measures in our homes, workplaces, and communities. Start by fixing leaks, using water-efficient appliances, utilizing rainwater harvesting systems, and being mindful of our water usage in daily activities,’’ she said. ‘’Encourage others to do the same and raise awareness about the importance of water conservation. Conserving water is not just a responsibility, it is a necessity. Together, we have the power to make a difference,’’ she stressed.
