During the 42nd Membership Meeting of the Rotary Club of Manila on June 9, Gordon said: "We need to fight apathy and indifference. What we do matters. To influence and drive change, we must make a difference, and we do that by actively participating in the country's affairs." Gordon also emphasized the importance of Rotarians' Four-Way Test, which asks: Is it the truth? Is it fair for everyone? Will it help people get along better and make new friends? Will it be suitable for everyone involved? "We must influence change by actively taking part in standing up for the truth, whatever be the challenge," he said, adding that openness to change will make a big difference in everyone's lives. Gordon also noted that Filipinos cannot be complacent and that each person's effort will help the people and the country in the long run. He even gave examples of how he and the residents of the former Subic Bay Naval Base stood their ground and won when the area became the first Special Economic Zone in the country, how he and his team saved the Aetas from a lahar when they took the native tribe out of the mountains during the Mt. Pinatubo explosion; and how thousands of Filipinos joined Red Cross 143.
