As the rainy season has officially arrived, the Bulacan provincial government intensified on Saturday, June 10, its measures to control, if not totally eradicate, dengue in the province. In a recent report released by the Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (PESU), the province recorded a total of 1,290 suspected dengue cases from January 1 to May 27, which is 41 percent lower compared to the same period last year. However, six dengue-related deaths were recorded. Five towns and cities were identified to have barangays with occurrences of four or more dengue cases within the past two weeks. These include Barangays Kaypian, Muzon and Sto. Cristo in San Jose Del Monte City; Barangays Lambakin and Nagbalon of Marilao town; Barangays Lawa and Pandayan of Meycauayan City; Barangay Poblacion of Pandi town; and Barangay San Mateo of Norzagaray town The affected age ranges of the diseases were one to 85 years old, but a majority of the cases were among those aged one to 10 years old, which is 46 percent of the total cases. With this, Governor Daniel R. Fernando signed Memorandum DRF-03242023-121 on the "Awareness of Dengue Prevention and Control," addressing the 24 mayors to step up and strengthen the enforcement of the Barangay Dengue Task Force. Fernando also reminded Bulakenyos to do their part to protect themselves against the threat of dengue. The provincial government also continually provides dengue chemicals and dengue NS1 kits to the local governments and hospitals in the cities and municipalities, and supports fogging and spraying to terminate mosquitoes. The Provincial Health Office-Public Health advised the public to seek early consultation at the nearest hospital or Rural Health Unit if they are experiencing fever for two or more days. Dengue is a disease transmitted through the bite of female Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes which often live and breed in water. During the rainy season, more breeding sites of mosquitoes are expected.
