'Trust your peers, take the lifeline': NPC exec sends strong appeal to Teves

In a somber yet ominous appeal, Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) Secretary General Rizal 1st district Rep. Michael John Duavit has asked Negros Oriental 3rd district Rep. Arnolfo "Arnie" Teves Jr. to come back home to the Philippines. "The plea is, Cong Arnie, please think of this as not as an attack on me but please look at it as a lifeline," Duavit told his party-mate in a plenary speech on Wednesday night, May 31. "We're asking you to have trust and faith in us, your peers," he added referring to Teves who is considered absent without official leave from the House of Representatives. Teves--tagged as the mastermind of the March 4 assassination of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo--has been out of the country since Feb. 28. He has refused to come back home for fear of his life. "Hell on earth is being separated from those we love. Cong Arnie, take the lifeline. Please come home," Duavit said after sharing a story about former Negros Oriental Governor Pryde Henry Teves, the Visayas solon's brother. Before his speech, Duavit voted to uphold the Committee on Ethics and Privileges' recommendation to suspend Teves for another 60 days, and to remove him from his committee designations in the House. The appeal to Teves can be interpreted as a strong message coming from the NPC, since it was the party's secretary general, Duavit, who sent it. The secretary general is often tasked with keeping party members in line. While Duavit didn't mention it, it can also be easily construed that the NPC members in the 300-strong House has been bearing the embarrassment of Teves' continued absence. The NPC official said in the same speech that Teves' attempt last month to seek political asylum in Timor-Leste has caused "discredit to the House of Representatives and the Philippine government" since it gave the impression that there were serious problems with the country’s justice system. "This can be cured if you did not mean to bersmirched our state, if you did not mean to do any harm to our House. All of this can be cured by just coming home," Duavit said.
