Pride Month gives opportunity to protect LGBTQ+ rights — British envoy
British Ambassador to the Philippines Laure Beaufils on Thursday joined members of the LGBTQ+ in the country in celebrating Pride Month, which she said is an opportunity to "reaffirm our commitment to protect" the community's rights.
While the fight for the community makes progress around the world, including in the Philippines, Beaufils said "there is still a long road ahead of us" to remove barriers being experienced by the community.
In a video message, Beaufils also said Pride Month gives the public the chance to promote equality and ensure that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, feel "safe, included and respected."
"We are proud to stand alongside you in this endeavour and we will continue to work closely with all of you where we can play a helpful role," the British top diplomat in the country added.
According to Beaufils, Pride Month is one of her favorite times of the year as it "is an opportunity to celebrate all things" that are Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual, Transexual, Queer or other identities.
Since becoming an ambassador two years ago, Beaufils said she has had many chances of meeting members of the community.
"Time and time again, I have been reminded how indispensable the LGBTQ+ community is to the fabric of Filipino society," she said.
