Marcos said this following his approval of the [Masagana Rice Industry Development Program (MRIDP)](https://mb.com.ph/2023/5/31/marcos-o-ks-masagana-agri-roadmap) on Wednesday, May 31. In an interview following a rice industry convergence meeting in Quezon City, the President said the MRIDP was a good roadmap but many things could still happen as the country strives to achieve the said rice self-sufficiency target. He likewise explained why the target rate was not 100 percent. "I don't think you have to be 100 percent because there's a… But I think 97.5 I think is a good enough number. Masasabi naman natin na (We can say that) we are able to feed. At least sapat ‘yung ating ani sa bigas (we have enough rice supply),” Marcos said. "You do not have to really go to 100 percent kasi 'yung three percent iba yung mga niche products. Yung mga organic, special na grain, Japanese rice, mga ganoon (The remaining three percent are for other necessary niche products-- the organic, special grains, Japanese rice, those things)," he added. Marcos, who also serves as the Agriculture Secretary, encouraged stakeholders to stick to the roadmap, which he described as a "good plan" that could enable the country's agriculture sector to surmount any roadblocks that lie ahead. At the same time, the President expressed elation over the conduct of the convergence meeting "to listen to the suggestions and the presentations that are being given." In a statement, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said that during the meeting, President Marcos spelled out measures that could aid the development of the agriculture sector, increase productivity and elevate farmers' economic status. Among these measures are convergence, establishing more cooperatives, adopting mechanization and [new technologies](https://mb.com.ph/2023/5/31/pbbm-wants-fast-growing-agro-industry-for-ph-like-in-thailand), and digitalization, which, he thought, could attract younger people "back into the business." "Let's make it as easy for them as possible and make it as attractive as possible for younger people. Digitalization, I think, is going to be part of that," he said. Around 2.58 million farmers out of the 7.46 million enrolled in the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) are engaged in rice cultivation. The top five highest rice-producing regions in 2022 were Central Luzon at 3.62 million metric tons (MMT); Cagayan Valley, 2.93 MMT; Western Visayas, 2.32 MMT; Ilocos Region, 1.96 MMT; and Bicol Region, 1.33 MMT.
