Vanessa Sarno bags three silvers to cap PH team's campaign in Asian Championships
Vanessa Sarno put a strong finish to Team Philippines' campaign in the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships after bagging three silver medals in the women's 71kg category in Jinju, South Korea on Tuesday, May 9.
The 19-year-old prodigy lifted a total of 239 kilograms for the overall silver after recording her bests of 107kgs in snatch and 132kgs in clean and jerk, both enough to place second in each lifts. Sarno edged Vietnam's Hong Thanh Thi Pham in snatch after she lifted 107kgs for the bronze medal while the Filipina beat Taiwan's Wen-Hue Chen who recorded a 132kgs to settle for the clean and jerk bronze. China's Liao Guifang lorded over the competition, recording a lift of 120kgs in snatch and 148kgs in clean and jerk for a world record total of 268kg lift to run away with a golden sweep in the category. Sarno's teammate Kristel Macrohon ended up eighth overall after a total lift of 218kgs which came from a 98kgs lift in snatch and a 120kgs lift in the clean and jerk. In all, Team Philippines is bringing home a total of six medals with Sarno's fellow teen prodigy Rose Jean Ramos also bagging three silvers in the women's 45kg category. Weightlifting queen Hidilyn Diaz also joined the competition in his first foray in the women's 59kg but only finished fourth overall while teammate Elreen Ando faltered and failed to finish in the same category.
