The Philippine men’s volleyball team got back at Singapore to come away with a 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23 win and finished in fifth place at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games on Monday, May 8, at the Indoor Olympic Stadium.
The Filipinos bucked a second-set loss and quickly regrouped to exact revenge on the Singaporeans and wrap up their campaign on a winning note in this year’s edition of the biennial meet.
The Philippines suffered three straight losses in Group A, including its last group stage match against Singapore on May 6.
After a tough campaign in the pool play, the Philippines made its breakthrough in the tournament after a five-set escape win over Malaysia in their classification-round meeting.
The Philippines trailed by three for most of the third set before putting it into a deadlock of 22-all, which saw the Filipinos go on 3-0 run and hold the 2-1 set lead over Singapore.
In the fourth set, the Filipinos found themselves tied at 23-all with the Singaporeans before Jade Disquitado untangled the Philippines with a crosscourt attack for the match point.
Jayvee Sumagaysay then denied the Singaporeans at the net to end the tight affair.
After their historic silver medal finish in 2019, the Pinoy tossers failed to eclipse nor duplicate the outcome and settled for fifth place in Vietnam 2021.
