Marikina LGU partners with DOST, DOH for maternal health care
The Marikina City local government signed on Monday, May 8, a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the Department of Health-Metro Manila Center for Health Development (DOH-MMCHD) to strengthen the city’s maternal health care (MHC) services.
The signatories to the MOA included Marikina City Mayor Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro, his wife Rep. Marjorie Ann “Maan'' Teodoro, DOH-MMCHD Regional Director Dr. Aleli Sudiacal and DOST-NCR Office of the Regional Director (ORD) officer-in-charge Engr. Romelen Tresvalles.

Through the MOA, the DOST donated 19 “Rx Boxes,” which are portable medical diagnostic devices that are able to do six different functions in one such as a blood pressure monitor, an electrocardiogram or ECG, a pulse oximeter, a maternal tocometer, a fetal monitor, and a thermometer. In terms of MHC services, the Rx Boxes will be able to help determine the health condition and status of babies in the womb. It can provide information on the child’s heart rate, pulse rate, blood pressure, oxygenation, heart rhythm and electrical activity, and fetal heart rate. In addition, the Rx Box can also help assess the maternal uterine contractions of the mother and its effects on the fetus.

Teodoro reminded healthcare workers to use the equipment carefully and efficiently so it can serve many patients since the Rx Boxes will be distributed across the city’s health centers. In support of the Universal Health Care Act, Rep.Teodoro also expressed her and her office’s willingness to subsidize or pay for the costs paid by residents who will avail of the maternal healthcare services in the health centers in Marikina. Primary health care is of utmost importance to the Marikina City local government, as proven by the city having the [highest number of healthcare facilities that are primary care facility (PCF)-accredited in Metro Manila by the DOH.](https://mb.com.ph/2022/10/09/marikina-govt-philhealth-partner-for-konsulta-program/) The 18 health centers to date in the city’s 16 barangays are also Philhealth accredited, with patients having access to the health insurance company to help financially cover their medical expenses.
