Makati LGU opens primary care facility

The Makati City local government formally opened the Makati Life Medical Center's primary care services on Monday, May 8, to deliver on its promise to provide quality healthcare services and treatment to Makatizens.

Makati City Mayor Abby Binay, together with other city officials and representatives of the facility, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"Today marks a great milestone for the people of Makati, especially our senior citizens, as now, they have access to quality primary care services 24/7. It took several years to complete, but we delivered on our promise to give Makatizens a bigger and more accessible hospital where they can receive medical attention whenever they need it," Binay said.

Previously named Ospital ng Makati 2 (OsMak 2), the Makati Life Medical Center is located in Malugay Street, Bgy. Bel-Air. It started accepting patients and other clients at 1:00 p.m. on Monday. The facility is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Makati Life's 24/7 primary care clinic offers Makatizens a complete range of primary care services, including preventive health screenings, diagnosis and treatment of common medical conditions, laboratory tests, RT-PCR tests, nutrition consultations, 24/7 pharmacy services, and more.

"Game changer ito dahil libre po ang lahat ng kanilang serbisyo para sa Yellow Card holders. Maski taga-District 2 ay pwedeng pumunta sa Out Patient Department (OPD) ng Makati Life. Gusto ko lang din ipaunawa na kahit tumatanggap ng pribadong indibidwal ang Makati Life, accessible pa rin ang healthcare services nito sa Yellow Card holders, kabilang ang senior citizens ng Makati at mga empleyado ng city hall. Mayroong “Yellow Card” zone na nagbibigay prayoridad sa Makati Yellow Card holders (This hospital is a game changer because all Yellow Card holders may avail of its services for free. Even those living in District 2 may go to the OPD of Makati Life. Let me add that even if Makati Life accepts private individuals, its healthcare services are still accessible to Yellow Card holders which include senior citizens of Makati City and employees of the city hall. A "Yellow Card" zone has also been set up to give priority to Makati Yellow Card holders)," Binay explained.

Ospital ng Makati (OsMak) patients may also be referred to Makati Life for specialized tests and services. The city is also working to fully integrate the medical records of both hospitals, so OsMak patients can have their check-ups at Makati Life and not have to worry about providing their patient history.

By doing this, Makati's healthcare system would come full circle. Makatizens now have more options to choose from when it comes to their health.

Meanwhile, the mayor added that the facility's other services such as its Emergency Room will be available in the coming months.

Makati Life has a has a total of 360 beds and 190 doctor's clinics and offers multiple specialty centers which boasts of advanced medical technology and modern facilities focusing on prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services that include a Cancer Center with a linear accelerator for radiation treatment; a Cardiac Center with a cardiac catherization lab for angiography, open heart surgery, and organ transplantation surgeries; and a Physical Rehabilitation Medical Center that will use robotics in treating joint and soft tissue ailments.

The hospital also features a hybrid operating room that combines diagnostic imaging and surgical theater in one room to effectively manage complex surgeries. It also has certified heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system for a clean, germ-free environment.

Makati Life is the country’s biggest public-private partnership (PPP) hospital built through a joint venture agreement between LifeNurture Incorporated (LNI) and the City Government of Makati.

Binay first announced the construction of the facility in March 2021 after the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Makati approved City Ordinance No. 2021-021 authorizing the mayor to sign a PPP agreement with LifeNurture Inc. for the construction, operation, and management of the hospital.

The city government contributed P2.77B worth of assets, while LifeNurture obtained a total of P7B in equity and debt funding for the project.

The mayor underscored the importance of PPP and said that Makati Life serves as a good example of what could also be done by other cities and organizations to improve the healthcare system of the country.

In April last year, Healthcare Asia, an industry magazine that caters to Asia’s hospital owners, investors, administrators and policy makers, awarded Binay with the Public-Private Healthcare Partnership of the Year Award for the said facility.

The HealthCare Asia Awards honor hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare providers in the Asia Pacific Region that have risen above the challenges and made a remarkable impact on their patients amidst the massive disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Makati Life was named PPP in Healthcare of the Year because of its promising construction projections and its vision to become known globally as a transformative healthcare collaboration between the local government and private sector.
