Magnitude 5.3 quake rocks Isabela province


A 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook Isabela and nearby provinces around 7:36 p.m., Sunday, May 7, according to the earthquake bulletin issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the quake originated at a depth of 28 kilometers (km) and had its epicenter around 27 km northeast of Maconacon, Isabela.

It was initially measured as a 5.1-magnitude earthquake, but Phivolcs later revised it to magnitude 5.3.

The quake was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Maconacon, Isabela and Enrile, Cagayan; Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Tuguegarao City, Iguig and Peñablanca in Cagayan; Intensity III (weak) in Solana, Allacapan, Lasam, Gonzaga and Gattaran in Cagayan; Intensity II (slightly felt) in Cabagan, Cauayan, Delfin Albano, Ilagan, Jones, Ramon and San Pablo in Isabela; and Intensity I (scarcely perceptible in Sinait in Ilocos Sur, Dinapigue in Isabela, and Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte.

Phivolcs pointed out that the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It said the earthquake may not have caused damage to houses, buildings, and other infrastructure, but advised the public to remain vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
