Government forces killed Oscar Gandawali, the alleged mastermind of the ambush and second in command to Mandoc, during an operation on Wednesday, May 3, in Barangay Pilimoknan, Maguing.
Police Col. Robert Daculan, Lanao del Sur police provincial director, said Gandawali was killed after he resisted arrest and briefly traded shots with the police and military.
However, two persons were wounded, Army 5th Infantry Battalion (IB) personnel Staff Sgt. Michael Angelo Y. Virecio and Barangay Pilimoknan Chairman Gamon Manonggiring.
Daculan said the team was about to serve eight warrants of arrest for murder and frustrated murder charges against Gandawali when the shootout broke out.
Recovered after the gun battle were a 9mm pistol with two magazines and ammo, one caliber .22 pistol, one cellphone, and suspected shabu.
Gandawali was the prime suspect in the ambush of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency agents in Barangay Malna, Kapai, Lanao del Sur on Oct. 5, 2018.
