SWS: 42% of Filipinos say ROTC should be optional for senior high students
Forty-two percent of Filipinos believe that senior high school students should have the option to take the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (course) or choose community service, based on the Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey results that were released on Thursday, May 4.
The First Quarter 2023 SWS Survey results also revealed that 35 percent of Filipinos think that ROTC should be compulsory for senior high school students, while 22 percent believe that ROTC should not be included in the curriculum.

Those in Balance Luzon had the highest support for ROTC to be an optional course at 47 percent, followed by Metro Manila (46 percent), Mindanao (42 percent), and Visayas (28 percent). Meanwhile, the Visayas (46 percent) had the highest level of support for senior high school students taking ROTC as a required course, followed by Mindanao (34 percent), Balance Luzon (32 percent), and Metro Manila (29 percent). SWS found the highest levels of support for the non-inclusion of ROTC in the senior high school curriculum in Metro Manila and the Visayas, each at 25 percent. Mindanao and Balance Luzon came in second and third, respectively, with 22 percent and 21 percent.
