No extensive damage reported from earthquake in Cagayan


TUGUEGARAO CITY – No extensive damage to property was recorded in the province of Cagayan due to the magnitude-5.8 earthquake that jolted nearby Isabela on Thursday, May 4, the Cagayan Provincial Information Office said.

Rueli Rapsing, head of the Cagayan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), said only visible hairline cracks were found in the buildings of the provincial government here.

Staff and patients of the Cagayan Valley Medical Center (CVMC) were evacuated from the fourth floor of the hospital here due to the earthquake.

Dr. Cherry Lou Antonio, chief medical professional staff, CVMC, said their engineers immediately conducted an inspection of their buildings to ensure the safety of staff and patients.

The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said that their power transmission services in Luzon were unaffected by the earthquake.

"The Luzon grid remains intact as there are no reports of power interruption and damaged transmission facilities," NGCP said.

The earthquake occurred before 9 a.m. and its epicenter was 29 kilometers northeast of Maconacon, Isabela.
