Metro Manila Covid-19 positivity rate exceeds 20% for the first time in 15 months

The Covid-19 positivity rate in Metro Manila has increased to 20.4 percent for the first time since January 2022, based on OCTA Research’s monitoring on Thursday, May 4. According to OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David, the last time the region’s positivity rate exceeded 20 percent was during the Omicron BA.2 surge on January 29, 2022. David said the current positivity rate in Metro Manila climbed to 20.4 percent on May 3, from 14 percent on April 26. He previously stated that the spread of the Covid-19 Omicron subvariant XBB.1.16 may have contributed to the increase in Covid-19 cases. Positivity rate refers to the number of individuals who yielded positive results from among those who have been tested for Covid-19. The benchmark for the positivity rate set by the World Health Organization is 5 percent. Meanwhile, David pointed out that hospital occupancy for Covid-19 patients in Metro Manila has increased slightly to 25.5 percent. On Thursday, the Department of Health reported 1,190 new Covid-19 cases across the country, of which 513 cases were recorded in Metro Manila. David projected that the country may record 1,300 to 1,500 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, May 5. He said the country's current positivity rate is 18 percent, up from 17.1 percent the day before.
