Is PH ready to host FIBA? Let's fix our airports first, Binay urges gov't
Senator Nancy Binay on Thursday, May 4 expressed concern the recent power outage that hit the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 could affect the Philippines’ reputation as a host in the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Last April 29, the draw for basketball's 2023 FIBA World Cup took place in the Filipino capital Manila. Philippines, Japan and Indonesia - who failed to qualify - will co-host the tournament which begins on 25 August and ends on 10 September. The final will take place in Manila's Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena.
Binay noted that aside from the power interruption that hit the NAIA 3 last May 1, Labor Day, the government is still dealing with the technical glitch that caused massive flight disruptions, both local and international, last January 1, or New Year’s Day.
“In a few months tayo ang mag ho host ng FIBA. Kaya yung mga ganitong pangyayari …kumbaga, nine nerbyos tayo na baka meron itong malaking epekto (we will be hosting the FIBA. That’s why, we are nervous that this incident may somehow affect our hosting),” Binay said in a press briefing at the Senate.
“Nakita naman natin yung nangyari nung January 1 at saka itong May 1. Maraming nagambala na turista, (We’ve seen what happened last January 1 and last May 1. There were so many tourists who were inconvenienced), whether foreigner or local,” she pointed out.
Binay said she hopes that any plans by the government and airport authorities to fix and improve the country’s main gateway would finally materialize.
This includes the possibility of pushing through with the move to privatize the operations of all NAIA terminals.
“Ayoko na dun sa point na magsisihan pa, ang gusto ko malaman ano ba yung concrete solutions na ginagawa na. Hindi yung plano palang gawin, kundi yung actual (na gagawin) (I don’t want to go back to finger-pointing, I just want to know what are the concrete solutions they have. Not the ones still at the planning stage, but what they will actually do),” she said.
Binay said the NAIA management should consider entering into a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) similar to what was done by the Mactan International Airport, which she noted now boasts of a state-of-the-art facilities.
“Kasi kulang ang pondo ng pamahalaan. Maganda talaga pumasok ang private sector kasi andun ang (Because government doesn’t have the fund. It’s best for the private sector to enter because they have the) technical capability and financial capability,” she stressed.
