Coach's challenge, other proposed changes to be implemented in PBA on Tour
The PBA is taking advantage of its offseason tournament to test and implement a set of proposed rule changes which could be applied to the upcoming 48th Season.
Deputy commissioner Eric Castro along with technical consultant Joey Guanio and operations senior officer Mauro Bengua drafted the proposed rule changes which also include the introduction of the coach's challenge and adjustments on the goaltending and double foul rules. The double personal fouls will no longer be added to the team foul count while the ball possession, after an erroneous call following a goaltending review, will now depend on which team has the ball possession before the review. The timing device will also now longer be stopped during the last minute of the first, second and third quarters. The technical team presented the proposed rule changes to assistant coaches from all of the 11 teams during a meeting on Wednesday, May 3, attended by Ginebra's Richard del Rosario, Blackwater's Junjie Ablan, Converge's McJour Luib, Magnolia's Tonyboy Espinosa, Rain or Shine's Caloy Garcia, San Miguel's Peter Martin, Terrafirma's Monch Gavieres, TNT's Bong Ravena, Meralco's Luigi Trillo, NLEX's Adonis Tierra, NorthPort's Waiyip Chong and Phoenix's Jon Jacinto. “As much as the teams will have the opportunity to try new combinations and game schemes, the league will take the opportunity to experiment new rules and rule interpretations with the objective of improving the PBA game and make it even more exciting," said PBA commissioner Willie Marcial in a statement. After being implemented in the PBA on Tour, the proposals are set for final scrutiny by the league officials and the members of the "competition committee" composed of coaches.
