10,000 OFWs sign up for gov't housing program

The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) will soon start processing the applications of around 10,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who signified interest in the government’s housing program.

The applications were submitted to the online platform of the OFW party-list group which was opened after Rep. Marissa “Del Mar” Magsino signed a memorandum of understanding with the DHSUD that paved the way for the collaboration to include as many OFWs in the government’s housing program on April 30.

All the applications will be subjected to the assessment, verification, and submission of documentary requirements to the DHSUD.

DHSUD Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar has assured the OFW Partylist that the department will continuously work on delivering its mandate to provide decent and affordable shelters to Filipino families dreaming to have a house of their own.

The DHSUD is currently at the height of rolling out a housing program aimed at building one million housing units every year until 2028 to address the country’s housing backlog pegged at more than 6.5 million units.

“The ‘Pambansang Pabahay’ meantime espouses inclusivity and sustainability as among the guiding principles in its implementation. Everyone wanting to own a home will surely be given an opportunity to pursue this dream. Thanks to the OFW Partylist for allowing us to fulfill this mission, this time with our kababayan abroad,” said Acuzar.

Magsino, for her part, vowed to continue backing up the “Pambansang Pabahay” in the legislative scene while her representation promotes the welfare of OFWs around the world, their housing concerns included.

This is the reason, according to her, why the OFW Partylist has opened an online platform for the submission of those interested in government housing.

"In just four days after we started our preliminary database, we already received 10,000 submissions today (March 4) from our OFWs who are interested to be beneficiaries of the government’s housing for OFWs,” said Magsino.

She said that once the list was already evaluated and cleared by the DHSUD, the OFW Partylist will resume receiving applications for new applicants.
