Shaolin Kungfu headlines Chinese cultural festival next week


Chinese martial arts Shaolin Kungfu is coming to the Philippines.

The Chinese Embassy in Manila made the announcement on Wednesday, May 31, as China and the Philippines continue to advance their exchanges, especially on people-to-people ties.

The performance of the thousand-year old martial arts will be held on June 6 at East Ocean Palace Restaurant in Aseana Business Park, according to the embassy.

Shaolin Kungfu is one of the oldest and most renowned styles of martial arts of Chan Buddhism, which originated and was developed in the Shaolin Temple in the Chinese province of Henan more than 1,500 years ago.

Other Chinese cultural shows and activities are also expected to be performed, which are:

• Taijiquan, a traditional physical practice characterized by relaxed, circular movements
• The "Night banquet in Palace of Tang Dynasty"
• Yu Opera/Henan Opera Mulan, a classic play based on the legend of a Chinese folklore heroine Hua Mulan• Incense making techniques
• Art of sugar-figure blowing
• Art of fruit pit carving
• Art of paper-cutting and Dengfeng ceramics

"Let us expect yet another highlight of China-Philippines cultural exchanges!" the embassy said.
