'Betty' maintains strength, moves northwestward over sea east of Batanes
Typhoon Betty (international name: Mawar)Â maintained its strength, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported on Tuesday, May 30.Â

In its latest forecast track, PAGASA said typhoon Betty was spotted 315 km east of Basco, Batanes with maximum sustained winds of 150 kph near the center and a gustiness of up to 185 kph. It is moving west-northwestward at 10 kph. Tropical cyclone wind signal (TCWS) no. 2 remained hoisted in the places of Batanes, the northeastern Portion of Cagayan, and Babuyan Island. Meanwhile, the rest of mainland Cagayan, the northern and eastern portions of Isabela, Apayao, the eastern parts of Ilocos Norte, the northeastern portion of Abra, and the north portion of Kalinga remain under Signal no. 1. PAGASA said typhoon Betty may possibly weaken over the next few days due to cooler ocean winds, dry air intrusion, and increasing vertical wind shear.
