PAGASA: 'Betty' continues to move slowly over waters east of Batanes

Typhoon Betty (international name: Mawar) is still moving slowly over the Philippine Sea east of Batanes and Babuyan Islands, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday evening, May 29. (PAGASA)
PAGASA on Monday evening said Betty was last detected 440 kilometers (km) east of Calayan, Cagayan or 385 km east of Basco, Batanes. It has maximum sustained winds of 155 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 190 kph. Tropical cyclone wind signals (TCWS) are still in effect due to this weather disturbance. Signal no. 2 is currently hoisted over Batanes and the northeastern portion of Cagayan including Babuyan Islands. According to PAGASA, strong winds ranging from 39 to 61 kph may affect these areas within 36 hours. Residents were advised to remain alert against the potential impact of cyclone hazards. Signal no. 1, on the other hand, remained raised in seven areas: the rest of mainland Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Kalinga, the eastern portion of Mountain Province, and the northern of Aurora.

Heavy rainfall, other impacts

Betty will continue to unleash heavy rains in parts of Northern and Extreme Northern Luzon. The state weather bureau said about 50 to 100 mm accumulated rainfall may threaten Batanes, Babuyan Islands, the northern portion of Ilocos Norte, the southern portion of Ilocos Sur, and the northern portion of La Union tonight, May 29, until Tuesday evening, May 30. This, according to PAGASA, may prevail until Wednesday evening, May 31 until Thursday evening, June 1. “Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazard[s],” said PAGASA.
