BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Benjamin Magalong suspended classes from pre-school to elementary here on Tuesday, May 30, due to typhoon “Betty.”
Although no storm warning signal was raised in this city, Magalong considered the possibility of rain as the neighboring provinces of Abra, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Kalinga, and Apayao are under Signal No.1.
Last Saturday, Magalong called on residents to clean canals in preparation for Betty. The Baguio City Police Office and barangay officials had earlier conducted a cleanup drive to ensure that canals will not be blocked by debris during the rainy season.
The Department of Tourism-Cordillera suspended outdoor tourism activities in the region while Betty is still within the Philippine Area of Responsibility. The DOT urged local government units in highly vulnerable areas in the region to temporarily suspend outdoor tourism activities.
Establishments were reminded to activate protocols on Tourism COATS or Checking Our Aptitude on the Typhoon Season and implement security and safety plans.
DOT-CAR warned Betty may bring strong winds and heavy rainfall and caused flooding and rain-induced landslides in the Cordillera.
