38 passengers rescued as ro-ro runs aground off Siargao

Authorities have rescued 38 passengers of a roll-on, roll-off (ro-ro) vessel after it ran aground in the vicinity waters of Dapa, Siargao Islands in Surigao del Norte over the weekend.

* The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said that M/V Reina Xaviera hit shallow waters while transiting Siargao Islands last Saturday, May 27. According to the captain of the vessel, Capt. Prospero Nillo, the ro-ro’s engine malfunctioned while it was approaching the Port of Dapa. “Due to the strong winds, it drifted and eventually ran aground,” the PCG said. Luckily, the incident was reported immediately to the PCG so responders from Coast Guard Sub-Station Dapa were able to assist the passengers. “All passengers were in good physical condition when they arrived at the port,” the PCG said.
