ILOILO CITY – Police Brig. Gen. Sidney Villaflor, acting director of the Police Regional Office (PRO)-6, warned the 76 barangay officials in Western Visayas allegedly involved in the illegal drugs trade to cease from their nefarious activities.
VILLAFLOR "I urge these elected government officials involved in illegal drugs to end it today. You can never escape the heavy hands of the law,” said Villaflor. Villaflor’s statement on Sunday, May 28, came after Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. disclosed that Western Visayas has the highest number of barangay officials in the country with alleged links to the illegal drugs trade. The PNP said there are 430 barangay officials nationwide in the list. Twenty punong barangays (chairmen) and 56 barangay kagawads (councilors) are in Western Visayas. Some of them had been arrested, surrendered, or under monitoring. The PNP did not release the location of these barangays officials but they could be in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental provinces or the highly urbanized cities of Iloilo and Bacolod. “I also urge the people of Western Visayas to continue to be vigilant in their respective communities and to do their part,” added Villaflor.
