Sea trips in Negros suspended due to 'Betty'

BACOLOD CITY – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District Western Visayas announced on Sunday, May 28, that some trips of Roll-on, Roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessels and other ferries in Negros Occidental were suspended over the weekend due to the threat of typhoon “Betty.” Those that cancelled trips on Saturday, May 27, were Montenegro vessels from the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. (Bredco) Port here to Dumangas port in Iloilo province, MV Felipe from port of Ajuy, Iloilo to E.B. Magalona, Negros Occidental, and MV Balt-BEP Expedition and MV Balt-BEP Journeys from Cadiz City commercial port in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental to Bantayan, Cebu. The following day, LCT Golden Lotus 2 from Sagay Feeder Port in Barangay Old Sagay to Estancia, Iloilo, and LCT Golden Lotus from Botongon port in Estancia and Iloilo to Sagay, also cancelled their trips. On that same day, M/V Ocean Jet 5 from Iloilo to Bacolod also suspended their trip due to rough seas. In a media interview, Commander Joe Luviz Mercurio, head of PCG northern Negros Occidental, said they are constantly monitoring the weather advisories so that they can also update the travelers on changes on the movement of the typhoon. “We are not complacent,” he said, adding that they are on heightened alert status and all their personnel and assets are ready. Mercurio said they have warned the people and those relying on the fishing industry not to venture out to the sea during adverse weather conditions. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Bacolod is also on full alert as part of their operational preparedness and intensified measures against the possible effects of the typhoon here. Policemen and other law enforcement agencies are also on alert and ready to respond to any emergency situation.
