The Manila Police District (MPD) conducted simultaneous clean-up operations in several streams in Tondo, Manila on Saturday, May 27, in preparation for "Typhoon Betty" (international name Mawar). MPD said it started cleaning and monitoring the streams and canals in the city when blue alert was declared by Manila's Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) last Friday. It added that the clean-up and hauling operations aim to prevent canal blockages that can cause floods. Personnel of MPD Raxabago Police Station (PS-1) and Barangay 135 cleaned Estero de Maypad, where they collected at least 10 sacks of garbage. Estero de Maypad is a 1.8-kilometer open drainage canal that connects Estero de Maypajo and Navotas river. Authorities said that trash thrown into the said waterway goes on the shores of Manila Bay if left uncollected. Meanwhile, members of Padre Algue Police Community Precinct (PCP) and Brgy. 250 cleaned the floating garbages in Estero de Magdalena. Several streets were also cleared by MPD members along with Barangay 7 and 48 constituents, including streets of Dagupan, Elcano, and Biak na Bato. MPD members said that search and rescue equipment are on standby to help in any emergency during the typhoon.
