CAMP Marcelo A. Adduru, Tuguegarao City, Cagayan – A 32-year-old police officer on vacation drowned while trying to save two children from drowning in a river in Pamplona, Cagayan on Friday, May 26.
ARINABO Police identified the victim as Police Corporal Mark Edhyson L. Arinabo, 32, assigned to the Makati City Police Community Precinct 3 and a native of Capalalian, Pamplona. Investigation said Arinabo and family were having a picnic when he noticed two children struggling in the middle of the Pamplona River. Arinabo jumped into the river to save the children but he was swept by the strong current. The two children, both 10-years-old and residents of Barangay Mapurao, Allacapan, Cagayan, were rescued. The Pamplona Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, with police and residents in the area, recovered Arinabo who was taken to the municipal Rural Health Unit where he was declared dead on arrival. Arinabo, also known as “Balong,” is the eldest of the six children of Edward B. Arinabo Sr. and Josephine L. Arinabo. Police Col. Julio Gorospe Jr., Cagayan police chief, condoled with the family of the victim on Saturday night, May 27. Arinabo graduated with a criminology degree from the Florencio L. Vargas College in Abulug, Cagayan in 2013 and passed the licensure examination for criminologists the same year. He entered the Philippine National Police under the National Capital Region quota and was included in Police Safety Basic Recruit Course (PSBRC) Matarang 2014-03. Arinabo took his oath of service on Jan. 12, 2015 and trained at the Regional Training Center 2 in Cauayan City, Isabela. Gorospe said Arinabo's heroism will continue to live in the hearts of everyone. Arinabo left behind his wife and two children aged seven and two.
