BFAR inspects quality of fish sold in Cagayan coastal towns
TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Region 2 (Cagayan Valley) recently inspected the quality of fish sold in public markets in the coastal municipalities of this province.
The inspection was conducted by the Enforcement and Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance Operations Center in Aparri, Camalaniugan, Sanchez Mira, and Claveria to deter the trading of fish caught through destructive methods such as blast fishing and cyanide.
.
BFAR also conducted an awareness briefing on prohibited and threatened fish species cited in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) list.
Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities can lead to the depletion of fish stocks which can have long-term negative effects on the environment, BFAR said.
It also affects the economy and the food security of communities that rely on fish as a source of protein, it added.
