'Betty' decelerates as it travels over PH sea east of N. Luzon

PAGASA said the cyclone was spotted 715 km east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan with maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 215 kph. It is moving westward with a speed of 15 kph. “Bagamat malayo pa rin [ang] sentro ng bagyong si Betty sa kalupaan ng ating bansa, talagang yung makapal na ulap na dala nito ay umaabot na sa ilang bahagi ng hilagang Luzon (Although the center of typhoon Betty is still far from land, the thick portion of clouds caused by the cyclone already reaches some areas of Northern Luzon)," said PAGASA Senior Weather Specialist Chris Perez. No tropical cyclone wind signals (TCWS) have been raised for Visayas and Mindanao. However, several areas in Luzon remain under Signal no. 1 as of 11 a.m. on Sunday: Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, the northern and central portions of Abra, Kalinga, the eastern and central portions of Mountain Province, the eastern and central portions of Ifugao, the northern and central portions of Aurora, Quirino and the northeastern portion of Nueva Vizcaya. According to PAGASA, the highest wind signal that may be raised is Signal no. 2. But under the worst-case scenario, Signal no. 3 may also be hoisted. Due to the hazards brought by typhoon Betty, gale warning will remain in effect over the northern and eastern seaboards of Northern Luzon, eastern seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon, and eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao. “As much as possible, fishermen with small seacrafts and other small sea vessels should avoid sailing [in the aforementioned areas],” Perez said in Filipino. *(Sonny Daanoy)*
