ZAMBOANGA CITY – Four teenage members of the Dawlah Islamiyah (DI) were apprehended by the military in Barangay Pabrika, Lanao del Sur on Thursday, May 25.
Major Gen. Antonio Nafarrete, Joint Task Force ZamPeLan commander, identified one of them as 18-year-old Abu Rasas, one of the key leaders under Fajarudin Pumbaya Pangalian, alias “Abu Zacariah,” the amir or leader of DI Philippines.
The others were identified as a certain “Saidi,” 18, a brother of DI Lanao sub-leader Abu Sham; and a 14- and 16-year-old boy.
Seized from them were several high-powered firearms and explosives.
These members of DI-Lanao under Juhari Sandah, alias “Abu Morsid,” were reportedly waiting for supplies and food coming from supporters when they were apprehended during an operation.
Nafarrete said troops of the 32nd Infantry Battalion acted on information from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) under Esmail Cosain, alias “Commander Delta,” regarding the presence of unidentified armed men in Barangay Pabrika.
Sensing the arrival of the military personnel and MILF members, a group of armed men scampered off.
However, the four minors were nabbed by the operating team.
Various weapons were recovered, including a 7.62mm M14 rifle, 5.56mm M16A1 rifle, 5.56mm R4 rifle, 40mm M203 grenade launcher with defaced serial number, 7.62mm Springfield rifle, five improvised explosive devices, five 40mm GL ammunition, assorted ammunition, magazines, and personal belongings.
Nafarrete said there is no letup in the pursuit against DI.
“Dawlah Islamiyah in our area of responsibility is currently diminishing. Likewise, we shall maintain our efforts to defeat them as quickly as possible,” he said.
“We would like our fellow citizens to remain calm as we work tirelessly to maintain the region's peace and development,” added Nafarrete.
Meanwhile, due to fear, residents of Marogong evacuated to nearby municipalities after alleged lawless elements threatened to attack the municipality after the capture of four members.
The DI gave a three-day ultimatum for their release, with Commander Zacariah allegedly telling residents to bring their valuables because they might not be able to retrieve them after anticipated violence.
Lanao del Sur police director Police Col. Robert Daculan said they have deployed more policemen to Marogong. However, he said they are having difficulties establishing communication channels in outlying barangays.
Army 32nd Infantry Battalion commander Lt. Col. Edward Vetenio said the situation was "under control" but did not elaborate.
Initial reports from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council disclosed that 259 families have evacuated as of 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 27.
A total of 206 families or 1,236 individuals evacuated to the municipality of Binidayan while 45 went to Balabagan town and eight families to Madalum town.
