Brace for cyclone-enhanced southwest monsoon – PAGASA

The state weather bureau, in a press briefing held on Saturday, May 27, said areas including the western sections of MIMAROPA, Visayas, and Mindanao may experience rain showers beginning Sunday, May 28, despite not being directly affected by super typhoon Betty (international name: Mawar). Such regions might experience rains due to the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” which may be enhanced by Betty. These monsoon rains could extend until Tuesday, May 30 for the western sections of MIMAROPA and Western Visayas. According to PAGASA, this phenomenon may cause circumstances such as floods and rain-induced landslides. Lastly, the southwest monsoon may also trigger a solid breeze for near-gale conditions on Sunday evening or Monday morning in the Visayas, the eastern part of Central Luzon, and Mindanao. With these events, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) advised precautions: to take preventable measures for small seacrafts and, if possible, avoid navigating the sea in this weather. *(*
