TACLOBAN CITY – In commemoration of World Hunger Day on Sunday, May 28, at least 12 Manila-based restaurants will donate a portion of their sales in support of the campaign to end hunger. Janelle Carlos, executive assistant  and operations manager of Thrive Global Philippines, said participating restaurants include Gino’s Brick Oven Pizza, Bamba Bistro, Cyma (four locations), Souv! by Cyma (three locations), One World Butchers, Cafe Fleur, and Pardon My French. Thrive, a non-profit organization and beneficiary of the campaign, will receive 10 percent of sales from the specialty dishes of these restaurants that will be used to feed Filipino schoolchildren. Special dishes include Tiramisu at Gino's Brick Oven Pizza, Tindahan ni Maria Salad at Bamba Bistro, Roka Pasta at Cyma, Smoked Pork Belly at One World Butchers, Spiced Chicken a la Plancha at Cafe Fleur, and Butter-Lemon Barramundi at Pardon My French. Thrive, which began 10 years ago in Bangladesh, expanded its program to the Philippines in 2015. To date, the organization feeds more than 400 Filipino children each school day in four schools, including Dawahon Integrated School in Bato, Leyte, and City Gates Academy in Antipolo, Coron, and Bambang. "By joining this campaign, you can help us continue our mission to feed hungry schoolchildren for their holistic growth," Carlos said. Monica de Ocampo Casperino, Thrive-Philippines president, said that through the program, they would be able to increase their reach to more than 5,000 children in 20 schools in their waitlist. “It is truly heartening to see many of the top restaurants in the city join together to raise awareness of hunger, and to help feed children in need,” she said. She added that one in three Filipino children faces daily hunger, a 25 percent increase on the heels of the global pandemic.
