BACOLOD CITY -- Mayor Alfredo Abelardo ‘Albee’ Benitez confirmed on Friday, May 26, the detection of two suspected cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the city.
Benitez said the suspected cases were from a backyard piggery in Barangay Taculing here, but the two pigs originated from Bago City, Negros Occidental.
Benitez said that one pig died on Thursday, May 25, while the other was already weak when checked by personnel of the Department of Agriculture (DA)-Western Visayas, who visited here on Friday, May 26.
Benitez said that a confirmatory laboratory test will be conducted in Manila, but he noted that based on the initial test, the two pigs were 99 percent positive for ASF.
The mayor, citing the pronouncement by the City Veterinary Office, said that the virus is not hazardous to humans.
However, he said there is a need to heighten the measures against ASF to protect the piggery industry.
Benitez said the city and the provincial government will create a joint executive order to contain the presence of ASF here.
Benitez said they have borrowed equipment from DA to intensify their hog testing in barangays.
