A summit meeting to jumpstart a country-wide intervention program for malnourished Filipino children in the first 1,000 days of their lives will be held on Saturday, May 27 at the Manila Hotel Tent City.

It will be attended by the Department of the Interior and the Local Government Secretary Benjamin "Benhur" C. Abalos Jr., Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rex Gatchalian, and Department of Health Assistant Secretary Dr. Beverly Lorraine C. Ho, said newly-formed Children’s 1st One Thousand Days Coalition (CFDC) which is headed by former Senator Joey Lina. The United Nations Children's Fund Representative to the Philippines Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov and World Bank Operations Manager for Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand Achim Fock are also set to deliver keynote messages. Moreover, National Economic and Development Authority Secretary Cielito Habito will also speak on the "Urgent Need to Address Malnutrition during the Children’s First 1000 Days of Life" while Dr. Marilyn H. Ortiz from the Philippine Children’s Medical Center and St Luke’s Medical Center will discuss the "Impact of Malnutrition on the Human Brain during the Children’s First 1000 Days of Life." Other speakers will be former Chief Justice and World Vision Chairman Reynato Puno, Rotary Club of Makati Central President - Elect Cris Chiong, Chief of Nutrition Information and Education Division Jovita B. Raval of the National Nutrition Council, and Milagros Elisa Federizo, Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC-NCR. Also attending the event are Representative Anthony Rolando T. Golez Jr. of Malasakit@Bayanihan Party List, Rep. Angelica Natasha Co of the Committee on Welfare of Children, Sen. Riza Hontiveros, Sen. Bong Go, George T. Barcelon, Dr. Amado Parawan, Management Association of the Philippines vice president Atty. Alexander B. Cabrera, Philippine Medical Association president Dr. Maria Minerva P. Calimag, and Cecilia Banca Santos, Founding President of the Philippine League of Government and Private Midwives Inc. "The summit comes amid appalling data on severe malnutrition in the Philippines. The UNICEF Philippines said '95 Filipino children die daily from malnutrition, 27 out of every 1,000 children do not get past their fifth birthday, a third of Filipino children are stunted or short for their age, and that stunting after age 2 can be permanent, irreversible and even fatal,'" said CFDC. Aside from the discussion, a covenant signing will also be done "to arrest the appalling state of the nutrition, health and well-being of the nation's children" and to sustain the coordinated work of the CFDC until the crisis is resolved, within 10 years.
