Foreign diver drowns in Batangas


MABINI, Batangas – A 43-year-old Chinese diver drowned during a diving lesson in the sea in Barangay Ligaya in this town on Thursday afternoon, May 25.

Police identified the victim as On Ki Ng, a resident of Hong Kong.

The drowning incident was reported to the police a day later on Friday, May 26, at 4 p.m. by Mabini Tourism Officer Ian
Bueno.

Bueno told police that the victim, together with Daniel Burgaud, joined a 100-meter technical diving lesson being conducted by Wah Shoun Wong at 4 p.m. at the Casa Escondida Resort.

However, Burgaud noticed that the victim not moving and pushed away by the underwater current upon reaching a depth of 100 meters.

Burgaud signalled the victim but did not respond. He approached the victim and found out that he was already unconscious and was immediately taken to the surface.

The victim was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead at around 5:45 p.m. 

Police noted that the resort did not report the incident to them.

Meanwhile, a 64-year-old barangay tanod or watchman drowned while swimming in the sea in Barangay Laiya Aplaya, San Juan, Batangas on Friday afternoon.

Police identified the victim as Antonio Maruzo, a resident of Barangay 14, Caloocan City.
