PH hopes to reach agreement with Kuwait on shelters for overseas Filipinos

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is hopeful that the Philippines and Kuwait would eventually come up with a set-up that would serve the interests and protect the respective laws of both countries.

DFA Assistant Secretary Paul Raymund Cortes on Thursday made the pronouncement after Kuwait suspended the new entry visas of Filipinos after both countries failed to reach an agreement with regard to providing shelters for migrant workers in the Gulf nation.

The Philippines supposedly had some "actions that were construed as violations" of Kuwaiti laws, according to Cortes.

"We will continue that dialogue so hopefully in the future, magkaroon ng (there would be) better understanding on what constitutes as assisting our nationals within the bounds of their law," Cortes said in an interview.

DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega already said earlier that Kuwait "had some issues" with the Philippines providing shelter to runaway Filipinos who wanted protection. De Vega maintained that "it is the obligation" of the Philippine government to do just that.

Cortes said the Philippines understands Kuwait's stand as they have their own laws and regulations.

"We respect them and we also want to make sure that when we're in another country, we abide by their lines and not cross it,” he said.

"We will continue working with the Kuwaitis on ensuring [that what] comes to taking care of the well-being of our Filipinos are within the bounds of their laws," he added.
