Occidental Mindoro town registers highest heat index so far this year at 53℃

San Jose in Occidental Mindoro recorded the country’s highest heat index so far this year at 53 degrees Celsius (°C) on Wednesday, May 24, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The 53°C heat index was recorded by PAGASA at around 12 p.m. on Wednesday, surpassing the 50°C heat index that was registered in Legazpi City, Albay on May 12.

According to PAGASA, an area with a heat index of 52°C or higher is considered to be in "extreme danger" because "heat stroke is imminent."

Meanwhile, Borongan, Eastern Samar topped the list of places with the highest daily heat index observed on Thursday, May 25, at 47°C.

A heat index ranging from 42°C to 51°C indicates impending “danger,” as “heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely,” and “heat stroke is probable with continued activity,” PAGASA said.
